REED CITY — Taylor Steig is following along almost the same path as her sister when it comes to a softball career. Steig will be playing softball for the 2016 season at Grand Rapids Community College, she announced recently. Both she and older sister Amanda were on the 2013 Reed City squad that went to the state quarterfinals. Amanda, a senior on that team, went to GRCC for two softball seasons and in April completed her first spring with Cleary University in Howell. Taylor finished her high school career but had two hip surgeries which cut her softball time. She had a third hip surgery this past season and took softball off while attending Northwestern College in Traverse City. Now she’s ready for a college career in softball. Steig said she’s recovered from her hip surgery and has been umpiring games in the LAT League at Bristol. She graduated from Reed City in 2014 where she played mostly at first base. “(GRCC) told me they’ll need me to catch some and basically be utility,” Steig said. She’s playing in a GRCC summer league to get ready for her first collegiate season. “Everything’s kind of rusty,” Steig smiled, adding that she’s especially working on her hitting. “The coach (Jennifer Bourbina at GRCC) coached our fall ball team and I thought she was a pretty good coach.” She missed a season but Steig is confident she’ll be back in the groove when another season starts. “I’ve already started to get back up,” she said.
