EVART - Haidyn Simmer had a big night in Evart's (Feb.18) 62-52 loss to Houghton Lake but the Evart basketball standout and his teammates are looking for better success ahead. Simmer scored 24 points. "It was a tough battle but it was a good game," he said. "Both teams played very well." The Wildcats had lost 57-34 to McBain Northern Michigan Christian on the previous Tuesday in the season opener. "I thought we came out better than we did against NMC on Tuesday," Evart coach Kris Morgan said. "We worked on some things. We wanted to push the ball better on offense. We had some culture stuff we wanted to clean up. On those two fronts, we did well. We pushed the ball up the court. Haidyn Simmer had some nice open fast breaks. It wasn't the outcome we wanted, but it's definitely a step in the right direction for us." As for Simmer's performance, "his NMC game kind of shocked his system a little bit," Morgan said. "We've talked about him being one of the better players every night on the court. He responded." It was the first week of contact competition for Morgan. "With the issues we dealt with early in the season too, it put us in a bind," Morgan said. "We're back in it. We'll look forward to getting better."
