REED CITY - Reed City wrestling fans received a sneak preview of the 2013-14 Coyote team in the annual red and black intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night. The scrimmage also gave coach Roger Steig a chance to figure out who will be wrestling for him in various spots this season. "It went very well," Steig said, pointing to senior Adam Kehr (152), junior Matt McGahey (119) and junior Thayne Steig (130) as among this top wrestlers. Kehr and McGahey have been state qualifiers. Kehr has been to the state finals twice. But there are others including junior Abe Angious (112), sophomore Jimmy Bywater (103), junior Jon Green (171), junior Devyn Ward (160) and senior Drake Walker (140). Steig said the Coyotes will have a full lineup in the 14 weight classes going from 103 and ending at heavyweight. "We'll be pretty solid all the way through," he said. "We're going to be pretty solid this year. Our program has picked up this year a big step forward. We'll be more competitive than what we've been." The Coyotes have a home quad Dec. 11 to open the season. For the rest of this month, they're at South Haven Dec. 14, at Hesperia Dec. 18 and at Ravenna Dec. 21. With the intrasquad scrimmage last week and a scrimmage at Lakewood the previous week, Steig likes where his team is at. "We're actually a little ahead of where I expected to be at this time," Steig said. "We have real good work ethic in the practice room. It's making things go along better than I expected." In the Central State Activities Association, Steig expects Chippewa Hills and Hesperia to be favorites again. 'I think we'll have a team that will surprise some people," he said.
