REED CITY — Dean McGuire is a simple guy. The Reed City boys basketball coach doesn’t try to overwhelm his players with many offensive plays or defensive systems. Instead, he wants his team to know few plays and systems, but do them very well. On Monday, when other coaches might have tried different defenses, rotations or plays against a lesser opponent, McGuire kept doing what he wants his team to perfect. The end result was almost perfect. The Coyotes rolled to an easy 79-46 victory over Hesperia while taking steps at getting better in the process. Reed City is now 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the Central State Activities Association. “I come from the school that you don’t do a lot of things, just do the few things you do well,” McGuire said. For the Coyotes, that means playing pressure defense and getting up and down the floor. McGuire was happy with the end result, but believed there is room for improvement. “We all agreed in the locker room that we have to work on defense better,” he said. “We have three guys talking on the floor and we need to have five. We also have to rebound a little better, but I thought we moved the ball better.” The ball movement was key in the first quarter as Reed City raced to a 29-7 at the end of the first quarter and 57-18 at halftime. The Coyotes handed out 15 assists in the game with Chad Samuels and Kyle Wright each recording four, while Nolan Patterson dished out three. “We play well together and we are very unselfish the coach likes to say,” Patterson said. The second half was much the same, playing pressure defense and getting out on the break. Reed City was led by Chad Samuels with 22 points, while Ryan Willis tallied 12 and Eric Grannis and Patterson chipping in eight each. Willis also grabbed nine rebounds. Hesperia was paced by Traxton Gordon with 23 points. “We are getting better each practice and game and we work hard,” Patterson said. That is what McGuire likes to hear from his players. “We have to get better and we did,” he said. “We moved the ball and we had a lot of putbacks.” Reed City is in action Thursday when it travels to Central Montcalm. REED CITY 79, HESPERIA 46 H 7 11 10 18 — 46 RC 29 28 13 9 — 79 Hesperia (1-7, 0-7 CSAA) Merrick Kraus 2 0-0 4, Tyler Delonge 1 0-0 2, Traxton Gordon 3(4) 5-6 23, Joe McKeown 5 5-6 15, Alex Prado 0 0-3 0, Brett Salisbury 1 0-2 2, Totals 12(4) 10-17 46.
