Reed City 4-11, Newaygo 14-2

NEWAYGO — Reed City won the second game 11-2 of a CSAA Gold twinbill on April 13. Newaygo won the first game 14-4. Sidni Rushford took the pitching loss in the opener, striking out four and walking two. Jordyn Storch, Kamryn Myers and Rushford had two hits apiece. Maddie Morgan, Madi Brown and Drew Arnold had one hit apiece. Storch led off the second game with her first career over-the-fence home run. Morgan and Rushford had two hits apiece. Devin Willard, Kiera Barker, Bailey Brummel and Arnold also had hits. Reed City (3-3, 1-1) is home with Fremont on Friday. TRACK Reed City at Newaygo NEWAYGO — Reed City was sixth in the big school division for boys at the Newaygo Invitational on April 13 with 29.5 points. Big Rapids won with 150.5 points. Reed City’s Heaven Hurley tied for fifth in the high jump (4-10). For the Reed City girls, Carmen Guy, Emily Libey, Jennelle Straathof and Meghan Borst were third in the 800-meter relay (2:02.14). Reed City had a Central State Activities Association meet at Central Montcalm on Tuesday and is at Kent City on Friday. Evart, Reed City at Harrison HARRISON — Evart won a three-team boys meet at Harrison on April 11. Evart had 98 points compared to 53 for Harrison and 24 for Reed City. Harrison won the girls division (91.5), followed by Evart (38) and Reed City (28.5). For the Evart boys, Danny Griffin (11.72 seconds) won the 100-meter dash, while other firsts went to Kyle Stokes (23.87) in the 200, Josh Woods in the 800 meters (2:23.56) and 1,600 meters (4:54.34), Alex Hamilton in the 3,200 meters (11:33.38), Richard Foster in the 300 hurdles (49.86), Cody Pritchard, Ben Randall, Kyle Stokes and Griffin in the 800-meter relay (1:34.64), Griffin, Randall, Stokes and Josh Woods in the 1,600 relay (4:27.50), Austin Hamilton, Andrew Booher, Josh Woods and Nathan Woods in the 3,200 relay (9:26.23) and Scott Martin in the high jump and long jump (18-11) For Reed City, Jared Kienitz was second in the 200 meters (26.82), Calvin Rohde was second in the 400 meters (57.26), and third in the 800 meters (2:28.43) and Michael Johnson was second in the discus (106-0). For the girls, Brooke Belleville, of Evart, was first (13.73) and Meghan Borst, of Reed City, was second (14.35) in the 100 meters. Reed City’s Emily Libey won the 200 meters and teammate Leighta Johnson won the 800 meters (3:10.3). Belleville also won the 400 meters (1:09.30), and teammate Sarah Nelson won the 3,200 meters (15:18.28). Reed City’s Hannah Boza took the discus (90-6). Evart’s Macey Wallace won the long jump (14-5 ½). Pine River at Cadillac CADILLAC — Pine River’s girls placed fourth in the small school division while the boys were second at the Cadillac Invitational April 13. “Logan Powell had great races in the 200 and 400, and anchored the second-place finishing 800 relay along with Anna Lindquist, Becca Horan and Kenzie Ruppert,” Pine River coach Eric Gebhard said. “Lindquist also placed first in the pole vault. Kelsi Charles and Selma Barnett had great runs in the 1,600 and 3,200.” Elijah Lewis finished first in the 200-meter dash and 400 and the long jump for the boys. “Hunter Moffit had a great night in the discus, throwing a personal best,” Gebhard said. “Hunter Esline was strong in the sprint relays, and finished third in the 200.” Pine River is at Coleman on Thursday. OUTDOORS Turkey hunting BIG RAPIDS — Northern Michigan has started what DNR wildlife technician Katie Keen anticipates will be a highly successful turkey hunting season. “We’re seeing lots of turkeys,” Keen said. “Everyone around the office has been seeing groups of turkeys. It’s exciting. It should be warm. Last year, we had snow that first week.” The first season is April 17-23. “The weather is looking good,” Keen said. “We’re seeing birds. I was looking at the remaining licenses. For Area K, as of (last week), there are more than 70 licenses available for the second season (April 24-30). The first season, they’re all gone.” Hunt 243, on May 1-31, offers all hunters a chance to get a license. “Right now, you don’t know what the birds will be doing within the next week,” Keen said. “The birds are out chasing one another. They’re very visible right now. “The focus right now is on turkeys and the big message is anyone can get a license. There were days when you couldn’t purchase hunt 234 over the counter. Now you can get one.” May 1 to June 1 is the application period for elk and bear hunts, Keen added.
