LEROY\u00a0- Pine River's wrestling team took first place Saturday in its season debut at the Sanford Meridian Invitational. The Bucks defeated Breckenridge 81-0, Midland High 59-16, Hemlock 64-9 and Sanford Meridian 36-33, the Bucks won 48-19 over Freeland in the finals. Undefeated wrestlers of the Bucks were Jordan Stone at 112, Nathan Park at 103, Elliott VanDreumel at 130, Kyle Nixon at 140, Jeff Gross at 160 and Adam Langworthy at 171. Jacob Wilkins at 152 was 4-1. "On individual matches we lost, to try to save extra points or you call them bonus points, to not give them up, there was a tremendous effort by the kids to keep matches close and doing everything they could for the team," said Pine River coach Tim Jones. "They seem to be coming along very well right now, with some conditioning and technique. We'll go to plan B." Jones noted that last season, Jordan Stone was out of the lineup. "He had some injuries at the end of year. But he looked real strong on the day Saturday," said Jones. "VanDreumel is up a few weighs but looked strong on Saturday. Gross and Langworthy both wrestled very well." Pine River this Wednesday is home with Manton and Kalkaska. The Bucks will have two teams (varsity and JV) competing. Action starts at 6 p.m. The Bucks are only one short of two full teams. On Saturday, the Pine River varsity will go to the Tri County Invitational.
