LEROY - Five players from the Highland Conference championship Pine River softball squad earned first-team all-conference honors this season while another standout was on the honorable mention list. First-team honorees for the Bucks were senior Chelsea Nelson at third base and juniors Cayman Gatt at shortstop, Jamie Justin at pitcher, Jandney Mattson at catcher and Christie Nelson at second base. Senior Brooke Sebastiano was on the honorable mention list. Chelsea Nelson at third base had a .367 batting average with two doubles, eight triples and a fielding average of .907. From the leadoff position, she had 15 RBIs. During the season, Nelson figured her batting will be better this season. "I think I'm pretty much where I was at last year," she said. "We got a lot of situation stuff done (in preseason)." Christie Nelson at second base had a .413 batting average with six doubles and two triples plus 26 RBIs and a .922 fielding average. At second base, "I'm a good fielder and I usually know where to go for the ball," Nelson added. It's her second year at second. As a freshman, she played right field. "In the summer leagues I used to play second base," Christie said. "I just need to relax and have a good time." Justin batted .427 with two homers, 33 RBI, three doubles, five triples and a fielding average of .989. She had a 23-7 pitching record with a 3.23 ERA, 152 strikeouts and 60 walks. Jandney Mattson at catcher batted .363 with three homers, four triples, six doubles and 39 RBIs. Gatt had a .530 batting average with six doubles, three triples, one homer, 30 RBIs and .955 fielding average. Gatt, a junior, has played varsity since her freshman season. She was happy with her hitting and also with her play at shortstop. "I played there last year and in my freshman year, I caught," she said. "I think our whole team has improved. Since the beginning of the season, we've improved a lot. We have gotten better at defense and we're more disciplined at the plate."
