LEROY - Wrestling might be a winter sport for high schools but Pine River junior Kyle Nixon is keeping mighty busy. Nixon is scheduled to partake in the AAU Scholastic Duals at Orlando's Disney World and was slated to leave Wednesday (June 27) and returns July 4 with wrestling July 28 to July 3. Nixon said prior to the trip he wasn't sure who he could be going with. The coach is from Saginaw. "I'm on one of the Michigan teams," he said. "There's a couple of Michigan teams going. We're competing in the all-star division, which is made up of state qualifiers, state placers and state champions." Nixon took seventh place at the stare finals last season. "I found out shortly after the state meet this year (that he would be attending)," Nixon said. "I've been working out with Zack Cooper (of Chippewa Hills). I'm not sure of many other people around that are going." It will be an $830 investment to attend, Nixon said. "I get around 12 or 13 matches," he said. "I'll be wrestling against people from all over like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, Georgia, all those states, everywhere." Nixon hopes to have enough success at the tournament to draw eyes from college coaches. "I want to get my name exposed to college coaches," he said. "This is a well known tournament." Nixon has four years left of high school experience and hopes to keep getting better at the high school level. He's hoping to stay busy during the summer. "I've been trying to get as many matches as possible," he said. Nixon finished seventh at 125 pounds at the state meet and wound up with a 47-6 record for the season. He was 3-2 at the state meet.
