MANTON - Pine River's girls team snuck past Mason County Central 88.5-81.5 on Friday in track and field competition to win the Manton Invitational. There were 12 teams in the meet. Taking firsts for Pine River were Devyn Powell in the 200 meters (26.31), and 400 meters (1:00.0), and Mary Ware in the shot put (31-11). Second-place finishers were Ware in the discus (88-8) Michelle Kelsey in the high jump (4-10), and the foursome of Shiloh Ruppert, Kelsey, Jasmine Blackrick and Powell in the 400-meters (53.54). Third place went to Cheyanna Rizor in the 1,600-meter run (6:00.32). She was fourth in the 3200-meter run (13:13.05). Robyn Peppey had personal bests in both throws while Ware has added two feet to her shot put best from year ago. "It was actually pretty decent weather," said Pine River coach Jan Burch. "It was competitive. It was good for Devyn to get competition from Adri (Sigafoos of McBain Northern Michigan Christian) again in the 400. Mason County Eastern had a freshman (Jordan Goodman) who was pretty fast too. She gave (Powell) some competition. "In the mile, Cheyanna Rizor continues to lower her times." Pine River is at regionals Friday at Clare. The Bucks also ran on May 6. They defeated McBain 90-67 and McBain NMC 118-29. Pine River netted firsts from Powell in the long jump (13-9), 100 dash (13.23) and 400 dash (59.77), the foursome of Kelsey, Ruppert, Blackrick and Powell in the 800 relay (1:54.74), Kelsey in the 200-meter dash (28.4) and long jump (4-8), Mary Ware in the discus (91-7) and shot put (30-9) and Anna Lindquist in the (8-0). Robyn Peppey was second in the discus (84-9) and shot put (29-1). Also second were the 1,600-meter relay team (4:52.12), Rizor in the 800 meters (2:44.40) and 1,600-meter run (6:04.75), Ruppert in the 300 hurdles (54.79) and 100 hurdles (17.83). "Finally nice weather, and it brought out the best in the girls," Burch said. "We had 15 personal bests and five more season bests."
