LEROY — Pine River won another Division 4 team regional wrestling title on Wednesday and did it in convincing style. The Bucks (30-4) stormed out to a 52-0 lead against Roscommon in the title match and coasted to a 61-9 win. It’s their third straight regional title and will send the Bucks to the state quarterfinals against Clinton (28-7) at noon on Feb. 24 at Central Michigan University. The semifinal and finals are on Feb. 25. “Being in your own gym, you feel a little bit of a boost,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “Roscommon is a very good club and earlier in the year they were ranked. Both teams thought they were going to win. Once you get going, that electricity changes stuff.” Pine River started out with an 11-0 lead on a 14-3 major decision for Jaycob Roberts (125) and a pin for Andrew Park (130). Brock Nelson (135) defeated Danny Rowe 13-0 and Justin Cole (140) picked a dramatic pin in 3:20 after being behind 8-5. “That was a big win and also Brock Nelson at 135,” Jones said. ‘He had been beaten by that boy earlier in the year in Marquette. That was a big win for him to come back.” “It was a huge win for us,” Nelson said. “Roscommon came in, I’d say, real cocky. We wrestled very good. Everyone had awesome matches tonight.” “I knew we needed the pin and I knew we needed the points,” Cole said. Tucker Fansler (145) pinned Nik Thomas in 5:45 and Malachi Holmes (152) pinned Walter Sichin in 1:10 for a 31-0 lead. The shutout continued with Joe Rigling (160) pinning James Herrick in 30 seconds, Tim Rizor (171) defeating Cory Richardson 11-4, Raden Holmes (189) pinning Jeremiah Waterman in 53 seconds and Brian McCurry (215) pinning Gabe Stern in 2:15. Roscommon got wins at 285 and 112 to avoid the shutout. Holly Bailor (103) won by forfeit and Tyler Signor (110) took a 9-3 win. “You’re just glad you can win one of these with a bunch of different kids,” Jones said. “We lost seniors from last year and we had two freshmen in our lineup and typically we don’t have freshmen in our lineup.” In the regional semifnals, the Bucks defeated Frankfort 63-15. Winners for Pine River were Jordan Kuetz, Molly Holmes, Nelson, Cole, Malachi and Raden Holmes, McCurry, Andrew Frisbie and Caleb Nolf.
