LEROY \u2014 Tristen Nelson scored 11 points for Pine River (10-8, 7-6) while Hunter Esiline and Brad Holmes added 10 apiece and Mason Powell had nine points and seven assists in Friday's 59-49 win over Lake City. Pine River had quarter leads of 17-6, 29-15 and 44-31. On Wednesday, Pine River beat Maron 55-32. Mason Powell led the Bucks with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Tristen Nelson had seven points and six rebounds. Pine River is home Thursday against Evart to end the regular season. Pine River's boys basketball team lost 67-63 to Brethren on Feb. 20 in boys varsity basketball action. Pine River was up 17-16 after the first quarter, but trailed 28-25 at halftime and 55-42 after the third quarter. Pine River had a 21-17 scoring edge in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough. Esline had 18 points and nine rebounds, while Powell had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, Nelson 16 points and five rebounds, and Trent Holmes 10 points and six boards. \u201cBrethren shot the ball really well and we didn't defend overly well,\u201d Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. \u201cThe second quarter kind of put us behind the 8 ball. The start of the fourth, we got some easy baskets off turnovers. It ended up being too little too late.\u201d The Bucks rallied, but came up short against the McBain Northern Michigan Christian Comets on Thursday 75-69 in boys basketball action. Pine River trailed 34-23 at halftime but was able to keep things interesting in the second half. Powell netted a season-high 29 points and Esiline had 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Bucks also played on Feb. 17 at Kalkaska and won 53-47.
