LEROY\u00a0- Kassy Nelson of Pine River was named this month to the Associated Press honorable mention all-state squads for Class C. A first-team All-Highland Conference selection this season, Nelson led the Bucks in scoring and rebounding with 15.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while also averaging 2.9 steals and 2.8 assists per contest. Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said Nelson excelled in her junior season despite taking on more of a workload for the Bucks after the loss of several guards last season. "Kassy started at point guard for us like she did last year, but she had a much bigger role this year and the other teams would focus on her more," he said. "For her to average close to the same numbers she averaged last year with the workload she had this year was very good. I was happy with the way she responded and the way she let the game come to her." Nelson said playing AAU basketball during the offseason helped her hone her craft prior to the start of this past season. "I played AAU all spring and just focused on improving my whole game," she said. "I just focused on working on my fundamentals and being a better all-around player. I knew I was coming into new role and I was going to have a little more on my plate this season."
