LEROY - For Pine River's Trevor Holmes, it was quite a feeling last week to celebrate a Highland Conference boys track championship. But earlier in May, it was a special feeling for Holmes to win the Division 3 regional 3,200-meter race in 10:08.89. He will be performing in the state finals for Division 3 this Saturday at Comstock Park. "We were very balanced and we were very strong," Holmes said of the Pine River team. "In our dual meets, we went undefeated." Holmes is a junior in his second year of track. "We're a lot improved (from last season)," he said. "We're good in every single race." At regionals, "I felt great," Holmes said. "The only person who thought I was going to win was me and my coach (Eric Gebhard). And we did it." The 10:08.89 at the regionals was a personal record for Holmes. "The key was the fifth and sixth lap," he said. "The key was to not fall back." It's Holmes' first trip to the state finals. "I feel great, I can't wait," said Holmes, who hopes to clock the race in 9:59. "There will be no excuses. The key is hitting the pace, running even mile splits. Coach has done a very good job of getting me to do that." Holmes has also run the 800, 1,600-meter runs and the 3,200-meter relay. The 3,200-meter run has obviously been his best.
