REED CITY\u00a0\u2014 Austin Hansen represented Reed City on the Central State Activities Association\u2019s all-league baseball squad with a second-team spot this season. Eric Grannis and Logan Straub were on the honorable mention list. Hansen batted .460 and was a catcher and pitcher. \u201cHe really helped us out and was a good leader,\u201d Reed City coach Marty Shaffer said. \u201cHe was a good backstop when he caught. I wish I could have had him for one more year.\u201d Grannis was a utility infielder while Straub pitched, and played second base. Grannis hit .285 while Straub batted .290. Grannis and Hansen were seniors while Straub was a freshman and will be a sophomore next spring. Reed City opened its summer season on Monday at home against Hesperia, falling 12-1 and 14-6. \u201cI told them we\u2019re out here to improve and use it as a learning tool,\u201d Shaffer said, noting that many on his summer team will be on the varsity next season. \u201cWe have a lot of guys playing football and basketball too. We have a busy schedule.\u201d Thiel had three hits for the doubleheader. Trent Sturgell had two hits and got hit twice. Straub, Patrick Jobes and Thiel were among the varsity players competing in the doubleheader. Ray Phenix was at the first game. Others were in younger grade levels. Summer ball gives the players a sport to work on, Shaffer noted. The Coyotes will be at Evart this Wednesday, at Tri-County June 23, at Hesperia June 25 and at Pine River June 26. They will be at home June 30 with Evart, at Grant July 7 and at Cedar Springs July 9.
