EVART - Kris Morgan remembers the challenges of taking over a boys basketball program only a few weeks prior to the start of the season. That happened last year when coach Matt Alexander gained a new teaching job in Clare. Morgan took over but without the benefit of a full summer to work with his players. That's why Morgan is enjoying this summer, watching his players working out in the Evart gymnasium. "They had football that week after school let out so we started basketball on Monday," Morgan said. "We started basketball Monday (June 18). We've been 1-3 p.m. and (this week) too through Thursdays. Then we have Morey Courts in Mount Pleasant. There's about 15 teams." Morgan has been having junior varsity and varsity players to his practices. "We've been averaging around 17 or 18 kids," he said. "This is really nice this year. They've been in the system now for two years. We still need to be more clear of expectations of what they expect of me and what we expect of them. We'll continue to work on that." Summer workouts will include open gyms in July, Morgan noted. The first week of July involves the mandatory dead week. Morgan lost several seniors from his 2011-12 team, making this summer even more important to prepare for the 2012-13 campaign. "There's a good solid group of sophomores, now juniors coming up," Morgan said. "We're running into issues here and there that we can handle now than later during the season. Districts are at home this year, so we're getting ready for that. We're looking for a good year."
