EVART — Paul Higgins enjoyed October fishing in the area. The Evart area resident, also the Wildcat girls varsity basketball coach, said last wee he's had enormous success recently with walleye fishing. Higgins said he's been getting good-sized walleye locally in the Muskegon River. "They're keepers, 16- to-18-inchers," he said. "That's been pretty much since the first part of September." The recent rainfall from earlier this week should be a benefit for anglers, Higgins indicated. "It will clean the leaves out of the water," he said. "There's been a pretty good leaf drop the last few days." Higgins is also an avid fisherman for salmon, steelhead and brown trout in the Manistee River. Higgins will get busier starting on Nov. 6. That's when the girls basketball practice season begins.
