SHELBY - Reed City's boys golf team will be playing in state regional action this week as a result of its performances in Thursday's Division 3 regional action at Shelby's Oceana Golf Club. Chippewa Hills finished second while Reed City was sixth. The top six teams advanced to the regionals next Friday at Howell. Whitehall won with a 334, followed by Chippewa Hills with 344, Shelby 347, Central Montcalm 358, Belding 361 and Reed City 366. "We scored within six strokes of the number I set for them," said Reed City coach Todd Dew. "That made me happy." The regionals will be at the Charlevoix Country Club in Charlevoix on Thursday. "I've never taken a team there so we're hoping the school lets us to be able to get up Wednesday and play a practice round," Dew said. "I know a lot of schools are doing that. It would be a benefit for our kids." At the districts, Derek Jacobson led Whitehall with an 80. He was tournament medalist. Tom Clark led Reed City with an 86, followed by Matt Kienitz and Jared MacKellar with 90s, Nick Fu with 100 and Ben Schermerhorn with 103. "I thought 360 would advance and that was our goal," Dew said. "It wasn't the best round of the year. We've shot in the 340s. We'll need to do that at regionals. We need to shave off five to seven strokes a player. We'll talk about some numbers. I don't need them to shoot exceptionally well. I need them to shoot a little better and they know it." The top three from regionals will advance to the state finals, June 17-18. "It will be difficult, competition is very good at regionals," Dew said. "Coach Dew and I were talking after practice and he said if we could shoot around 340, an 85 for everybody, then we would have a chance," Clark said.
