REED CITY — The recent 54-53 boys basketball victory for Reed City over Big Rapids was among the moments the Coyotes boys basketball team is hoping will move the team around in the right direction. It was less than two weeks before that players like junior Taylor Pelton were talking about a one-point loss in a non-league bout with Fremont. A switch to a 2-3 zone by Fremont was something the Coyotes need to make adjustments to. “It’s a couple of minor of mistakes, and we can change numerous games,” he said. The Coyotes got out to a 14-0 lead to Fremont and lost. They fell behind to Big Rapids early and came back and won. The key to having a consistent offense “is to adjust, make our reads and handle the ball smartly,” Pelton said. “I’m doing good, but I could do better.” It’s his first full varsity year. His role “is to get rebounds and drive to the boards,” Pelton said. “I’m getting a lot of rebounds this year.” As the Coyotes prepare for teams like Big Rapids, Pelton was fully aware of what it was going to take to enjoy more success: “Play good defense and we’ve got to get to the basket.” Looking ahead, Pelton is focusing on improving his game which means, “come to practice every day and working hard and give 100 percent every time.” The Coyotes play at Tri County on Friday night.
