EVART - Evart and Pine River competitive cheer teams open their seasons Saturday at the Houghton Lake Invitational. It's the only competition for both teams prior to the Christmas break. Marty Pattee is coaching Evart's team again. Megan Green, Kelly Lloyd, Ashley French and Atlanta Veuel are among the seniors. Evart had tryouts the weekend of Nov. 11. The first team practice was Nov. 18. "It's pretty good," Pattee said. "It's the beginning of the season. There are a lot of things I have to work out, switching different kids around. My core group stayed together I think they're going to be strong. I know the stunting will be strong. We still have work to do on our gymnastics. It's coming along nicely. They should give people a run for their money." Tiffany Lindquist is coaching the Pine River team. The Bucks started practicing Nov. 11. There are 15 girls on the team. Lindquist graduated two seniors last season. "I had a big group of freshmen last year and I have 11 sophomores this year," Lindquist said. She has one girl, Allie Peterson, who has been on the team three seasons. "There's a lot of good experience," Lindquist said. "They've improved a lot. A lot of the new ones coming in are doing really well." Lindquist said the team is still working on Round 3, which involves gymnastics and mounts. Kris Griffin Reed City athletic director, noted that her school does not have an official competitive cheer team this year. "We did not have enough girls interested to have a team so we have more of a club that will be working to get better next year and hopefully encouraging other girls to get involved next year. They will be going to a few meets but will be considered 'exhibition,'" Griffin said.
