EVART — It hasn’t been easy for the Evart Wildcats to get in a full slate of Highland Conference doubleheaders this season. On Tuesday, May 15, Evart, lost 7-2 to Pine River in the first game of the twinbill. It was 1-0, Pine River in the third inning of the second game when lightening struck. Because of the 30-minute mandatory wait and the anticipation of a thunderstorm soon after that, it was decided to suspend the game. It’s the third time the Wildcats haven’t been able to finish the second game of a twinbill this season Pine River scored one run in the third, three in the fourth and three in the sixth in the first game. Jake McKinstry pitched the first five innings for the Wildcats. Jerod Wheeler was on the mound in the sixth inning and Preston Boyd pitched the final inning. Evart scored one run in the third and one in the seventh. Lincoln Erickson went six innings, striking out 11 and walking one. Tyler Lewis pitched the final inning. “Of their seven runs only two were earned,” said Evart coach George Sims. “We had two errors in one inning that cost us three runs to have it go from 4-1 to 7-1. That kind of deflated us. When it’s 4-1, you feel you have a shot. We started off the inning with two outs and then we give them a couple of outs. That takes the wind out of your sails.” Garrett Long had a double and RBI for Pine River while Devon Ruppert had two hits, including a double and three RBIs. Matt McDonald had a single and RBI, Brandon Hoaglund delivered a double and Zane Kanouse had a single. “I thought Lincoln threw a nice game,” said Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert. “We played decent defense behind him. Devon got a couple of hits for us and that got us going.” Preston Boyd, John Danley and Jerod Wheeler had hits for Evart. I thought we played a good game and had one bad inning that really hurt us,” said Evart senior Jarek VanOrder. “We thought we were in (the second game) and could possibly win that one.” In the second game, Danley was on the mound for Evart and Ruppert for Pine River, Garrett Traynor’s suicide squeeze bunt brought in Brandon Hoaglund for the only run of the second game. “We have to be more consistent overall, up and down the line,” Ruppert said. “It seems like one guy is hitting and one guy is not. But I was pretty happy.” It wasn’t immediately known if and when the second game would be made up.
