BIG RAPIDS – Justin Langworthy is a Big Rapids hunter who shot his buck on opening day. He shot the buck in the Reed City area. It was an 8-point with 16-inch spread. It was a 100-yard shot. “We had never seen him on the property we hunt,” Langworthy said. “But I have a friend who hunts to the north of us and we had seen him on our trail cam. But I had personally never seen him myself. “It happened so fast. It was at 7:07 that morning and I let out a couple of grunt calls. I texted everybody I had shot a monster at 7:09. It happened so fast. It ran a ways, 30 yards probably, before it finally died.” Langworthy said it’s the first one he has taken in five or six years. “I’ve hunted my whole life ever since I was old enough to hunt,” he said. “It’s my biggest one. I’ve been holding out for a big one the last several years and this was it. “I went out the next morning and ended up passing on one that was just a touch bit smaller than him. I figured I would let him live.” Langworthy plans to keep hunting. “There’s been more deer this year than in years past, nicer deer anyway,” he said. Langworthy also rabbit hunts and will resume that when the deer hunting season closes.
