REED CITY — Dale Williams was there when the Spring Valley Golf Course started the Men’s Masters League. He recalls that it started in the early 1980s. “The league’s been going real good,” Williams said. He was an area native and moved back from Columbus, Ohio, in 1965 and eventually got involved at Spring Valley. Williams, 85, has played in other leagues in the past but has decided to focus on the Masters League. He subs occasionally in a men’s league on Thursday. He and his wife, Eva, played on the Friday night couples league for many years. She no longer is physically able to play. “She was a good golfer,” Dale smiled. “She hit the ball a ton.” The league expanded as more individuals retired from the bigger cities and moved to the area, Williams noted. His best score for nine holes at Spring Valley has been a 34. He usually shoots in the low 40s. Despite his age, Williams likes his driving abilities. “This is probably my last year,” she smiled. “It all depends on how I am next spring.” His partner has been Dave Steele, who still plays in the couples league with his wife. He also plays Fridays and subs on Thursdays.
