Pioneer photo/John RaffelREED CITY – Izaiah Lentz fell from the undefeated ranks in wrestling over the weekend, but the Reed City junior is still set to have an extremely memorable season on the mat.
“Izaiah Lentz was 30-0 going into our home invitational (Saturday),” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “He has been our rock in the middle of the lineup all year. He had been tough day Saturday getting his first loss but I fully expect him to bounce back like a champion.”
Lentz was 1-3 and placed sixth at 144 pounds on Saturday.
Last season, Izaiah, whose twin brother Elijah is usually around the same weight, had 31 wins and was honorable mention all-conference.
He’s focusing on staying injury free to pursue his goals. He got out of the district as a freshman but had an injury last year.
On the mat, “I try to move the guy around a lot and I try to be quick,” Lentz said, adding double-legging and shots are among his best moves.
The team has won a lot of matches his season and Lentz is hoping RC can contend for a district title.
“I’m excited to see how we can do,” he said.
His brother is one weight class below him. They do practice against each other but Izaiah admits “brotherly love kind of gets inbetween whatever competitive desires they may have against each other.
“We are very similar but we have slight differences,” he said.
During the fall, the Lentzs went out for soccer rather than cross country.
“I used to play soccer when I was younger,” Izaiah said.
The Lentzs run track during the spring but wrestling is clearly their favorite sport.
