File photoEVART – Evart and Pine River wrestling teams are sending wrestlers to the regional meet next weekend based on top four finishes at the Division 4 districts on Saturday.
“We had four of our student-athletes make it through to the regional round,” Evart coach Ben Bryant said. “Cole Hopkins continued his string of wins to nearly 100 in a row and claimed first place at 175 pounds. Alex Burhans and Ethan Conk both wrestled well and placed second at heavyweight and 113 pounds.
“Joseph Kunin, 150 pounds, was able to work his way to a third-place finish. The Craven brothers (Jaxon and Owen), Landon Babb, and Riley Ransom all gave it everything they had and came up just short, being eliminated in the blood round. We will be in Charlevoix next weekend.”
“We had a solid day at districts in Manton,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “Eight wrestlers advanced to the Regional in Charlevoix next weekend.”
Bryant Wing (106) placed third; Jordan Nelson (120) was runner up; Jericho Holmes (126), freshman was district champion and avenged a loss from the conference finals just a week ago; Damien Jackson (132) was third; Ryder Holmes (144) was champ; Paul Frayer (190) freshman was fourth and Caleb Gepford (285) was third in a very solid heavyweight class.
Andrew Baldwin was champ at 215.
“He was a state qualifier last year who has improved incredibly since starting as a freshman,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “This was his first ever tournament win.”
