REED CITY – It’s getting into the nitty gritty with late-season games and postseason action on tap, and Reed City’s Ty Kailing seems to have picked up the ideal time to be having some of his best shooting games.

Kailing and the Coyotes will be home on Friday against Central Montcalm and then gear up for the Central State Activities Association tournament next week, followed by the districts in early March.

“It was really rough earlier in the year, now we’re hoping to get things rolling into the districts,” he said.

The Coyotes struggled offensively in a win over White Cloud last Friday but Kailing is confident his team will be making its shots at the right time in upcoming games.

Kailing recently had 25 points against Holton.

“I was getting a lot of transition points and steals and had three or four threes,” he said while recalling that game. “I like the kick out threes. The key is getting into the rhythm and setting your feet and firing it.”

Defense, both Kailing and varsity coach Brennan Walsh said, has been the key behind a lot of Reed City’s recent success.

“We take pride in our defense,” Kailing said. “It’s probably the biggest part of our game. If your shots aren’t falling, your defense is what keeps you in the game.”

As a senior, Kailing also looks at himself as being a key leader for the Coyotes.

Some huge games are coming up and Kailing realizes there will be some tough opponents

“The key is working together, working hard and having fun out there and trying to continue the season,” he said. “I feel we’ll have one of the hardest districts in Michigan. We have to bring it.”
