LAKE CITY – “We played a great game,” Evart coach Carrie Kunkle said after Wednesday’s Highland Conference showdown between the No. 4 ranked team in Division 3, the Wildcats, against No. 8 Lake City.

But the Wildcats weren’t able to hit enough shots and fell to Lake City 42-34 for Evart’s first conference loss of the year.

Evart, which had won 12 straight following a season-opening loss to Sanford Meridian, fell to 9-1 in the Highland and 12-2 overall. Lake City is 8-1 and 13-1.

Earlier in the season, Evart defeated the Trojans 42-40 at Evart.

Kyrah Gray had 15 points, Emma Dyer nine, Addy Gray seven and Brooklyn Decker three for Evart.

“I thought the girls played with tremendous heart and intensity and demonstrated great sportsmanship,” Evart coach Carrie Kunkle said. “I give credit to Lake City. They played a nice game tonight and it was fun to watch and coach. It will be fun when we head into the districts.”

Evart is hosting the postseason districts and the field will include the Wildcats, Pine River, Farwell, Lake City and McBain.

“It was a great night of basketball for anybody who came out to watch,” Kunkle said. “Depending on how the seeds (at districts) end up and who wins and who loses, there’s a chance we could meet (Lake City) against.”

Also for Evart on Wednesday, Kyrah Gray had five rebounds and five steals, Dyer had four rebounds and Brooklyn Decker had 10 rebounds.

Lake City’s two big scorers, Ali Bisballe had 12 points and Mackenzie Bisballe, her sister, had 11.

“We took lots of shots,” Kunkle said. “They just weren’t falling for Evart tonight. We took several good looking shots but tonight, it just didn’t happen for us.”

Evart plays at Manton on Friday and has McBain at home on Tuesday.
