EVART – Joe Kunin is among the four Evart wrestlers going to the regionals and he couldn’t be more excited.

He placed third at 150 pounds in the district last weekend. The top four in each weight class advance to the regional.

Kunin is a sophomore and it’s his second year of varsity wrestling.

“I was going to play basketball my freshman year but my brother (Sam Bailey) said I’m wrestling and he would sign me up,” Kunin recalled. “Last year was iffy. I was learning. It’s a lot of improvement this year.”

Kunin has seen situations where he’s improved as a wrestler compared to a year ago.

“I do what I feel comfortable with,” he said, adding neutral is probably his strength. “I’m kind of even everywhere.”

Earlier in the season, Kunin acknowledged a goal was to either make it to the state finals or at least get close to that. He’s put himself in position for that by qualifying for regionals.

“I definitely want to improve on my bottom and top game,” he said.

Kunin also played varsity football during the fall as a defensive end.

“I’ve played football my entire life,” Kunin said, while adding he’s gotten to enjoy wrestling.

He will focus on lifting in the spring.
