Evart wrestler bidding for another undefeated state title

Cole Hopkins one win away from 100 straight victories

EVART – Cole Hopkins and two of his Evart wrestling teammates will be at Ford Field this weekend hoping to continue their success with a huge performance at the Division 4 state finals.

Alex Burhans and Ethan Conk are the two other Evart wrestlers contending.

Hopkins was 55-0 and state champion as a junior last season. He’s 44-0 currently at the state meet. If he wins his first match on Friday, he would be at 100 straight wins. His last loss was in the 2021 state title match. He would have to go 4-0 this weekend to win it again.

“Obviously he’s the favorite to win it,” Evart coach Ben Bryant said. “In order to win it, he’ll have to wrestle well. Cole is very determined and mentally strong.”

Burhans, another Wildcat senior, is  39-7 at 285 pounds.

“Last year, he lost out in the blood round of the state tournament, so he was one match away from placing (the top eight), Bryant said. “This is his second year of wrestling. To be ranked high and win a regional is pretty impressive. His mindset on wrestling and technique is a lot higher. His chances of placing high are pretty good.”

Conk, a junior 113-pounder, is 26-18.

“He’s put himself in a good position,” Bryant said. “He’ll have a tough opening round matchup but it’s a winnable one. He’s been wrestling very good lately.”
