LE ROY— Evart's girls basketball team was looking for a bounce back game after falling earlier in the week to McBain, and got it on Friday.
The Wildcats would come out firing against Pine River, beating the Bucks 49-20. Evart advanced to 14-3 on the year and 11-2 in conference play.
"I was very pleased with the fact that we came back with hitting our shots again, as we were really well rounded, scoring a lot of good passes and had good teamwork," Coach Carrie Kunkle said. "It's just great to have that feeling back again. The last couple of games it's just been hit or miss on our shots and tonight I really felt like we got some rhythm back."
It was all Evart with the Wildcats pulling ahead early and building a 28-9 halftime lead. They would go on cruise control throughout the second half and enter the fourth up 43-12.
"We all really focused on like our specialties on defense," Ally Theunick said. "Like some people would focus on good defensive help while others were face guarding, which I think really helps to succeed in getting good defensive stands."
It would be a balanced attack offensively for the Wildcats, with Addysen Gray leading with 14 points. Emma Dyer scored 13 points and Kyrah Gray 12 points.
For Pine River, the loss drops them to 5-12 on the year and 3-9 in conference play. Amanda Hall led the Bucks with five points while Emma Tice and Lilly Felsk both had four points.
"We were trying to take away the cuts today because I know they are really aggressive off ball and they cut to the rim," Coach Steffen Halvorsen said. "So we tried to take away anything off ball. Unfortuanately we didn't take care of the little things tonight. I think they might have been a little amped up because of the crowd because even our shooting was a little off tonight. I think playing for the hall of fame game we maybe put a little too much pressure on ourselves."
Pine River inducted members in its Hall of Fame during the evening.
Pine River will go to Lakeview (3-13) on Monday at 6 p.m. Evart will go to McBain Northern Michigan Christian (6-8, 4-7 in conference play) on Friday at 7 p.m.
