Cadillac ends Reed City's boys season

Viking defense too much for Coyote offense

BIG RAPIDS – Cadillac proved to be a very tough opponent for the Reed City Coyotes in nonleague boys basketball action a few weeks ago.

It was much the same in Wednesday’s Division 2 district semifinal game with the Cadillac bolting out to a 49-22 win.

The season ends for Reed City (14-10) while Cadillac (18-4) faces Hart (23-0) for the district title on Friday at Big Rapids High.

Cadillac won 62-41 in the first game. But the Coyotes used a patient offense and effective defense to hold Cadillac to a 12-10 lead after the first. Xavier Allen had five points in the quarter for Reed City.

The Vikings maintained a 20-14 lead after the second quarter.

“We stuck with them in the first half,” Reed City coach Brennan Walsh said. “We held their first stringers to 45, but we struggled to put the ball in the hole in the second half. We had some opportunities but it just didn’t fall for us.”

In the third, it was all Cadillac. The Vikings had a 26-14 lead before Max Hammond netted three for Reed CIty. But Jaden Montague hit a pair of threes to key his team to a 36-17 lead going into the fourth quarter. Charlie Howell had a semi-dunk for a 41-17 Viking lead early in the fourth. Teddy Szymanski netted a pair of shots for the Coyotes.

Max Hammond had seven points and Xavier Allen six for Reed City.

“They’re a tough team, they’re good,” Allen said. “They run well and they score inside. They’re just big. They’re going to be a tough matchup. I hope they win (the district) and go all the way for real.”

Jaden Montague had 17 points and Charles Howell 14 for Cadillac.

“They’re a good team,” Walsh said. “They have Charles Howell and Jaden Montague who are tough ballplayers. Everyone they put out there are skilled players. We made them earn it and they did earn it. Give them credit.”

“We came up short,” Allen said. “That’s all she wrote.”
