Zinger eyes productive season at catcher for Evart

EVART — Adam Zinger is a junior in his second varsity season for an Evart baseball team working to be a force in the Highland Conference this spring.

“I remember (last year) that we had ups and downs. The ups we had really showed their strength on our team,” he said. “We pitched well. We had pretty good pitching. When our pitching was there and our hitting was there at the same days, we won. That’s how it is with most situations.”

Zinger is a catcher, his same position as a year ago.

“I felt like I had a better season after my concussion, once I let go of that worry,” he said. “I had a play at home plate where I don’t remember what happened, but somebody’s shoulder got to the side of my head. I missed two doubleheaders, which isn’t what I wanted.”

But he’s recovered nicely from that episode. He points to leadership as a strength on the diamond.

“I’m a talker, I love to be loud,” he said. “I feel like leadership would probably be my best quality.”

Zinger didn’t think his fielding abilities as a catcher last season were as strong as they could have been.

“This year, I feel I’m picking up the ball and I’m able to block,” he said. “I feel very comfortable (with his arm).”

Zinger said he frequently calls pitches and notes that he’s caught for the Evart pitchers — Tre Dyer, Andrew Race and Jared Pattee — in the past.

Zinger also said he didn’t hit up to his expectations last season.

“Being a sophomore on varsity, I felt a little bit overwhelmed at times,” he said. “This year, I feel I’m stronger emotionally and physically.”

The Wildcats opened their season last week and got in a few outdoor practice days prior to their first games.

“In the gym, we’ve had good strategy to wear long sleeves to keep our arms warm so that when we get the hotter weather, we’ll be adjusted.”

Zinger likes his team’s prospects.

“There’s a lot of potential,” Zinger said. “We have good hitting and good pitching as well. It determines on how our defense plays. I feel we’ll have a good defense. We have some good baserunners. I feel it will be a good season for us. It’s all about teamwork.”
