Wrestling teams return to action on Saturday
REED CITY — The holidays will officially end this Saturday for area wrestlers when tournament action returns to the schedule.
Actually, wrestlers returned to the mat this week to get ready for weekend action, that includes the Reed City Team Invitational and the St. Johns Invitational, which will be on Pine River’s agenda.
Reed City Invitational
The Coyotes will be hosting their 11th annual team invitational on Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m.
Teams competing include Charlevoix, Elk Rapids, Evart, Manistee and Reed City. Each team will wrestle four opponents.
“We’ve seen Evart already and they’re young, in their first year,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “The rest of them, it would be our first time of seeing them. Manistee should have a pretty good squad.”
The Coyotes, who resumed practices on Monday also have a home quad next Wednesday. They have their individual invitational on Jan. 31, which will be followed by CSAA and postseason tournaments.
“We’re getting ready for the home run stretch,” Steig said.
St. Louis Invitational
Pine River will be competing at St. Louis this weekend in its first action since the Marquette Invitational prior to the holiday break.
“This is our first year there,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “We don’t know what to expect. It’s an individual tournament. We usually have a team tournament this weekend but the schedule didn’t work out. So we’re going to St. Louis for the first time.”
Pine River has a home dual with Manton and Forest Area next Wednesday in conference action.
Evart will be at Beaverton next Wednesday.
