Wrestlers set for state finals
REED CITY — Wrestlers definitely hope to be at their best this weekend.
Evan Skiver from Reed City and 11 athletes from Pine River will be traveling Wednesday to the Palace of Auburn Hill to start wrestling action on Thursday in the state individual finals. Action goes through Saturday.
Skiver will compete in Division 3 and Pine River in Division 4.
Skiver was a regional qualifier and is making his first trip to the state finals.
“He’ll wrestle a guy that he’s lost to twice,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “He’s improved so much and I feel his chances are pretty good. That first match (against Benzie Central) is going to be huge for him.
“It’s his first time down there but I think he’s going in with a lot of confidence.”
Tyler McCurry (189), Dominic Garcia (215) and Nathan Park (103) enter the state finals as regional champs while Andre Park (103), Tony Moore (119), Josh Jackson (215), Chase Morrison (285) are regional runners-up.
Also makimg the trip are Jordan Stone (112), Tucker Fansler (125), Phil Ragatzki (135) and Jeff Gross (171).
“It’s hard to say,” Pine River coach Tim Jones answered when asked which of his wrestlers could do extremely well. “Chase could place high, maybe Tyler McCurry. Tony Moore could have a breakout day and wrestle real tough. Dominic and Josh Jackson both have shots at placing top four.”
