Wrestlers off to good start

REED CITY  — Reed City was sixth at the Kent County Classic on Saturday.

Reed City defeated Godwin Heights 42-30, and Whitehall 42-33, lost to Holland 51-27, fell to Belding 62-18 and bowed 42-39 to Fremont.

Wrestlers that were 5-0 were Alex Brummel (135) and Dylan Chrispell (189). Going 3-2 were Kyle Lawrence (103) Jimmy Bywater (119), Jayson Johnson (130) and Derrick Rasor (160). Picking up two wins were Isiah Yonkin and Trent Willard.

“I’m pretty happy right now,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “It’s early in the year and we’re struggling to put in a lineup. We had some injuries and guys out sick on Saturday. So we were spotting all the teams we faced with 24 points. That was a big mountain to climb. I was pretty happy with our overall performance. We wrestled really well. Once we get a full lineup, I  think we’ll be pretty tough.”

Reed City is at Pine River Wednesday and at South Havenon Saturday.

Big Rapids 72, Evart 0.

Evart lost to Big Rapids in one of its matches at the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday.

“We had a lot of good teams, a few teams that are just starting out like Evart,” Big Rapids coach Ben Kosmalski said. “This is their second year. They had a pretty good showing. They looked a lot better than last year. They’re coming along.”

Wrestlers that competed during the day for Evart included Jacob Kleeves (152), Zach Parshall (160), Andrew Shaw (171) and Caleb Parrish (hwt.).

Pine River 3-2 at Tri County

The Bucks were 3-2 at the Tri County Invitational on Saturday. They defeated Lakeview 45-31 and Kenowa Hills 63-18, lost 35-28 to Cedar Springs and 44-21 to Tri County and beat Comstock Park 42-33.

Undefeated Pine River wrestlers included Dillon Stevens (103), who was 5-0, and Bryan McCurry (hwt.) who was 4-0. Tyler Signy (112), Jacob Roberts (119), Andrew Park (125), Nate Park (130) and Raden Holmes (189) were 4-1. Tucker Fansler (135) and Joe Rigling (160) were 3-2.

Pine River wrestles Beaverton and Reed City at home on Wednesday. Pine River is at the Marquette Invitational on Saturday.
