Wrestlers make improvements
REED CITY – It's the holidays but the Reed City wrestling team is eager to get back into action and resume the 2012-13 season.
Last Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Coyotes lost 60-15 to Hesperia and to Central Montcalm 36-34 in a pair of Central State Activities Association matches at Central Montcalm.
The Coyotes had two wrestlers that went 2-0 with Adam Kehr at 145 pounds and Jared Shyrock at 160.
Reed City wrestlers that earned one win were Dominic Garcia at 215, Travis French at 189, Evan Skiver at 215, Matt McGahey at 119, Thayne Steig at 125 and Troy Giese at 135.
“I feel we wrestled pretty well, said Reed City Coach Roger Steig. “Our kids have been sick in the last week. That has a big impact on our performance. The Central Montcalm match was exciting. It went down to the last match.”
The Coyotes were trailing and Shyrock was going for a pin to win. He had to settle for a decision.
Kehr has Reed City's best record at 14-1.
“Adam spent a lot of time in the off season training,” Steig said. “ He was a state qualifier last year. He has his goals set for higher than that this year. One of Adam's keys to success this year is he's much stronger on his feet than what he was last year. He wrestles well on the bottom We haven't found an opponent who can control him from the bottom. He puts himself in position to score all the time.”
Dominic Garcia is 13-2 for the Coyotes.
“Dominic is a pleasant surprise for a freshman,” Steig said. “It's amazing with his leadership qualities. He's been our biggest surprise this year.”
Reed City has a home team invitational on Jan. 5.
