Wirth having strong season for Coyotes

REED CITY — Brandon Wirth continues to have a strong cross country season and the Coyote senior is hoping his best is yet to come.

His best time this season was 16:32.9 at the Benzie Central Invitational. He was also first at the Clare Invitational and was fourth at the MSU Spartan Invitational.

Wirth has been third in Central State Activities Association Gold Division jamborees so far.

In his most recent race, Saturday at the Evart Wildcat Invitational, Wirth was first in the Blue Division in 16:40:3.

At the Katke Golf Course Ferris Invitational, Wirth was first in 17:39.6.

“I thought it was a pretty good race,” he said. “It was nice to be on the golf course terrain because we don’t run those a lot. It was more of a mental race for me.”

Wirth’s all-time personal best is 16:16 at Benzie Central last year.

“I’m really hoping to break 16 minutes and it’d be nice to break my school record,” he said. “It will take a lot of hard work in practice and a lot of mental stuff to get on the course and go out not just to win a race but get a certain time as well.”

Wirth said the best part of his race is the third mile.

“I may not have a better it or second mile but I’ll have a better third mile,” he said. “My second mile is where I’ll have to do some work.

“The team is looking good right now. We’re looking strong and smooth.”

Reed City rans at the Pine River Invitational on Saturday Wirth took first.

“It’s nice to see everyone come together now (on the team),” he said.
