Wirth ends two-sport season for Reed City

REED CITY — Brandon Wirth has closed out a unique fall sports season for Reed City.

Wirth, who played on the varsity soccer team, also ran cross country. His running season ended in Manistee at the Division 3 regional. He was 45th in 18:54.15.

“It’s taken a lot of energy during the day and sleeping during the night,” he said. “Constant travelling has been kind of an issue. I try to get as much stuff done in the classroom as I can.”

When it came to practices, Wirth said soccer would be his primary obligation and cross country is secondary. Soccer was usually scheduled later in the afternoon.

At Mason County Central, Wirth got a personal record of 18:49. He had been hoping for 18:30 at the regional.

“I need to focus on hills, and using my stamina wisely, not taking it all in the beginning and saving some until later,” he said.

Wirth indicated his first mile is where he goes the fastest. Then it starts evening out.

“I ran cross in the seventh grade and eighth grade,” he said. “I kind of grew up in the system.”

Wirth has been one of two runners on the Reed City boys team.

“With two runners, you have to focus on your opponents more,” he said. “The conference meets are nice. You know who’s right there with you and who you’re pacing with.”
