EVART – Now that his team has broken an eight-game losing streak, Evart boys basketball coach Kris Morgan is looking for his Wildcats to make plenty of noise in the remaining weeks of the season.

The Wildcats, 5-8, scored their first Highland Conference win of the season on Thursday with a 53-45 verdict over Manton. Preston Boyd and Jesse Lang scored 16 points apiece. Jon Hooker netted four triples and wound up with 15 points.

“We were up by four at halftime,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “Jared Pattee got into foul trouble. Jarek VanOrder got his fourth foul early in the third quarter and had to sit down.”

Brandon Albright came in and really helped out. “What helped out was Jon Hooker shooting those threes,” Morgan said.

Lang had 11 rebounds, followed by Jarek VanOrder with seven.

“We played Manton up there awhile ago and they beat us pretty bad. It was one of our worst games of the season,” Morgan said. “Early in the season, we were thinking we could win on our talent alone.”

On Wednesday Evart also won a home game, gainst Vestaburg, to break the eight-game slide.

Lang scored 20 points against the Wolverines and had 10 rebounds while VanOrder contributed 16 points and 15 boards.

“We beat Vestaburg earlier in the season,” Morgan said. “That was actually our last win. Then we had those eight losses in-between.”

The Wildcats play Tuesday night against Lake City at home.

“They’re really good kids,” Morgan said. “It was two big wins, but we need to get better. We have to put together a whole game. We put together spurts. We’ll play six minutes of good basketball. Then we’ll play two minutes of not-so-smart basketball and what they did those other six minutes goes down the tubes. We need to put together a whole game.”

Lake City defeated Evart by three points earlier in the season.

“We have to crack down on our defense a little bit,” Morgan said. “We had a lot of fouls (against Manton). We have to commit to team basketball and team defense.”

GIRLS
