LEROY — Evart’s Chelsea Kruse delivered an infield hit for the winning run to lead the Wildcats past Pine River 3-2 in a nine-inning second game Friday.

Pine River won the first game 6-0 in the Highland Conference softball doubleheader.

Rebecca Wirkutis went all the way in both games as Evart’s pitcher. She took the loss in the opener. Chelsea Bengry and Karena Hipkins had the only two hits for the Wildcats.

Hipkins had three hits while Sam Bramer and Tiffiney Danley had two hits apiece in the second game.

“It was great,” Danley said of the win. “We’ve been looking forward to this. It was teamwork. We worked together as a team.”

In picking up the second-game win, Wirkutis allowed two walks and struck out three. She scattered 11 hits.

Danley plays shortstop for Evart.

“Last year, we didn’t work as hard as we could have,” she said. “This year, we’re on the ball.”

Danley is hitting .327 and is playing strong defensively.

“We want to win district, we have to keep working together as a team,” Danley said.

Evart improved to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in the Highland Conference.

“This is huge, absolutely huge for us,” said Evart coach Josh Johnson. “We played real well in the first game too. It was a break through against Pine River. The girls now know they can win these games.”

Pine River fell to 19-9 and 5-3.

“Evart came out really hungry to win the game,” said Pine River coach Laura Mumby. “Offensively, when you get 11 hits and score two runs, you’re not getting key hits at key times.”

Hipkins had a sacrifice fly for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

“We made the defensive plays to stay in this game,” Johnson said. “Rebekah pitched a heckuva game. Karena caught a great game. It was a heckuva group effort. It was awesome.”
