EVART — If the weather would cooperate the Evart baseball and softball teams could be enjoying the spring weather to a high degree.

Both teams were able to get in limited action last weekend. Evart’s baseball squad opened with a split against Chippewa Hills on April 12. The Wildcats won the first game 1-0 but lost the second 9-3.

Tyler Mishler pitched three innings in getting the win for Evart. He also scored the game’s only run.

In the second game, Jarek VanOrder had two hits for Evart while John Danley, Tyler Wirth and Matt Mishler had one apiece.

“Our first game against Chip Hills, defensively we played very well,” Sims said. “I was very happy. We only had one error the whole game. The second game, a couple of walks and errors gave them some runs.”

Sims used that doubleheader, plus a nine-inning game with Pine River on Wednesday, as a chance to get his pitchers some work. He threw seven pitchers in nine innings against Pine River.

“We might have had a different outcome in that game if I kept in a few pitchers,” he said. “This early in the season, I want to give everyone a look. We used seven pitchers so we could see how they would do.”

This week, Evart has a home twinbill set for Thursday against Buckley and opens the Highland season April 27 at Marion.

SOFTBALL

In Evart’s only action last week, the Wildcats had a strong performance with a 10-7 and 16-1 doubleheader sweep over Chippewa Hills.

Karena Hipkins had four hits and five RBIs in the first game while Elizabeth Naranjo added three hits and Tiffiney Danley notched two. In the second game, Danley, Naranjo and Bengry had three hits apiece while Hipkins notched a double. Courtney Hooker and Magadalen Hyde had two hits each.

This week, Evart is home with Buckley on Thursday and at Marion next Tuesday to open the Highland Conference season.
