BEAL CITY — The Evart football team lost its Highland Conference opener.

The Wildcats are now 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Highland Conference.

Evart’s lone score came just before half as Jacob Fortune found Jacob Hopkins for an 18-yard touchdown. Fortune threw for 103 yards in the contest.

Austin Grein led the defensive attack with nine tackles, while John Danley added six tackles and an interception.

Evart ran just four plays in the third quarter.

“I thought our kids played real tough,” said Evart coach Pat Craven. “They fought hard and did not back down one bit. I’m proud of their effort.”

Beal City is 3-0.

The Wildcats are in action Friday when they host Marion.

“Our kids had a couple of tough breaks,” Craven said. “There were some questionable calls. I was pleased they fought through adversity.

“Our whole defense, I was pleased. Devon Van Order, a senior defensive end, had a nice game defensively. We have up 27 points but it was 13-7 at halftime and they scored at the end.”
