Wildcat softball team continues with preseason preparation

EVART  — It’s week four of preseason practices for the Evart Wildcat softball team.

The Wildcats were set to play Morley Stanwood at home today. Despite the recent warming trend, the status of that game was iffy, which would mean the season won’t start until after break when Evart’s at Glen Lake April 16 and at home April 22 with Lake City.

Coach Jeff Bressler is working with 10 varsity girls.

“I moved up a couple of underclassmen that showed some good potential,” Bressler said.

Sam Bressler will return as Evart’s No. 1 pitcher. Kendra Foster is also working on pitching.

Sabrina McKay is back at shortstop. Lorraine Foster and Courtney Sheldon are at first base or center field, Shayna Rushing at catcher, Taylor Rushing at left field, Megan Green in right field and Taylor Martin at second base.

“I have three pairs of sisters on the team: Lorraine and Kendra Foster, Rachel and Taylor Martin and Taylor and Shayna Rushing,” Bressler said.

Bressler said in the first few weeks, the Wildcats have been able to get outdoors once. Otherwise, it’s all been in the gym.

“We’ve been heavy on batting,” he said. “There’s pretty significant improvement in batting. We’re pretty much working on everything, trying to get well-rounded all the way around.”

Bressler acknowledged that it’s doubtful the Wildcats will be able to get some gametime in until after spring break.

Along with the Lake City twinbill, the Wildcats have home dates May 1 with Central Montcalm, May 3 with the Cat Classic, May 5 with Marion and May 16 with Pine River.
