EVART — it was a profitable way for the Evart girls softball team to open its Highland Conference season.

On Friday, the Evart girls improved to 7-1 with a 7-3 and 12-3 doubleheader sweep over Marion.

Rebecca Wirkutis took the win in the first game striking out seven batters in seven innings of work. Karena Hipkins had three hits including a double. Dannie Casey and Sam Bramer added two hits.

Hipkins had three hits in the second game with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Tiffinay Danley and Casey had two hits apiece.

“Im pretty happy the way they’re playing,” said Evart coach Josh Johnson. “We still have to get better defensively and we need to get better at small ball aspect of the game, those kinds of things.”

Evart is home Friday with Farwell.

“May is going to be busy for sure,” Johnson said.

Evart lost to Marion 13-2 on Friday in the first game of a Highland Conference doubleheader but came back for a 2-0 win in the nightcap.

Josh Wirth won the second game, fanning seven batters. Jeff Decator contributed two hits while Jared Wheeler and Jared VanOrder had a hit.

In the first game, Matt Mishler and Wirth both had hits for Evart.

Evart is home against Farwell on Friday.

“After this week, it will be at least two conference (dates) every week,” coach George Sims said. “There may be some non-league games sprinkled in. It could be 4 to 6 games each week. The week after, we’ll have six games because we have a tournament.”

Evart is at McBain NMC on May 10, at Pine River May 13 and at the Buckley Invitational on May 17. Sims is confident the team has enough arms to take care of a challenging schedule.

“I felt good coming into this year with any number of pitchers,” Sims said, adding that game cancellations have hurt. “We pitch inside and do what we can, but it’s not the same as pitching to another team.”
