EVART — Depth continues to be a key for Evart boys cross country team with runners like Micah Wetters bidding to provide plenty of it for the Wildcats.

Wetters, a junior, has been among the top three or four runners each race for Evart.

“I recently PRed at a meet with 18:20,” he said. “Before that (his PR) was 18:58. That’s a bit of a jump there.”

It’s Wetter’s third varsity season and has been his best one so far.

“My first year, I didn’t really know what to think,” Wetters recalls. “It was a good starting point. My second year, I improved by a minute by the end of the year. My goal is to improve another minute by the end of this year, which should be 17:50ish.”

Wetters helped Evart to a third place finish at the regional at Delta College last Saturday and will be going to the state final with the team. He was 20th in 18:43.

Recently, Wetters has been trying to go fast his first mile “and then try to work as hard as I can my second mile,” he said, “and then bringing it all in at the third. I don’t really know what my best mile is per se. But usually I have a good kick at the end and a good kick at the beginning.”

The team was near the top of the Highland Conference standings and finished third.

“It’s really going to be interesting,” Wetters said.

The state final is Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

Wetters also runs track in the spring.
