Walker focuses in on assistant's job at Reed City
REED CITY -- Roger Steig has been a familiar face as head wrestling coach for Reed City. The Coyotes have a new assistant coach but it's another familiar face.
Former wrestler Brett Walker is Steig's varsity assistant this season.
Steig's son, Ryan, was the assistant coach for the varsity and is now coach at the junior high.
Walker works at LeRoy Tool & Die and comes to Reed City practice every day.
"It's nice having Brett here," Roger Steig said. "He jumps right in with the guys and they get a good workout. It helps having him at practice."
Walker said he helped with the team last season as a volunteer.
"Our middle school wrestling coach resigned so (varsity assistant Ryan Steig) went to that position," Walker said.
Walker was a winning wrestler at Reed City, graduating in 2018. He wrestled five seasons at Reed City. He made it to regionals his junior and senior seasons. He was team captain three straight seasons. He also ran cross country and track and played baseball.
"I show them moves and while they're drilling I look around and critique them a little bit and help them do it right or if they have a question they can ask me," Walker said.
He usually wrestled at the heavier weights and Walker will sometimes wrestle with others around his size.
"I like seeing them have success on the mat," he said. "A lot of these guys are my close friends. But when they get out of line I holler at them."
But they don't seem to mind, Walker smiled.
