Voellker looking to end sophomore season on strong note

REED CITY —  Lauren Voelker has had a strong sophomore campaign for the Reed City girls basketball team but is hoping for a long postseason.

“We’re focusing on districts more than the normal games,” Voelker said a week ago. “We’re trying to figure out what we have to do to win and work on that. We’re going to try to pick up on defense a little more and work on shooting. This season, we haven’t shot well as a team. We’re working on shooting more.”

Reed City entered the post season at 11-9.

“I feel that we’ve been getting better at the season and we’ve played more like a team at the end,” Voelker said. “At the beginning of the year, we weren’t really playing together. At the end, we’re all clicking together and doing good.”

Voelker likes the progress she’s made in her first varsity season.

“I feel like I’ve gotten better as a player,” Voelker said. “I’m starting to relax and figure out how to play at the varsity level. You have to be a lot more physical and work together harder as a team. You have to go out there relaxed, play your game and play with the team.”

Voelker has seen improvement in her own game.

“I’m trying to understand more of what the team is doing, learning how different players play and how to stop them, and getting to know my teammates more so I know how they play,” Voelker said.

Wednesday night, Reed City plays at Clare at the host team.

“If we go out there and play our game and play as a team, we can go out three and win,” she said.
