VanOrder set for strong senior season at Evart

EVART — It’s Mara VanOrder’s fourth and final varsity season with Evart basketball and the Wildcat senior is eager to make huge contributions for her squad.

VanOrder indicated she’s improved each year in different facets of her game.

“I feel that I’m at the peak of my career,” she said. “I worked out a lot this summer. We had quite a few open gyms and scrimmages going on in the gym.”

VanOrder will continue to be a force inside for the Wildcats, but she focused during the offseason on improving her outside jump shot.

“I’m feeling really good about it,” she said. “Everything is really clicking. It’s coming together. I feel confident about it. I need to be ready for the ball at anytime and be confident I’m going to make it. I have to be quick but not in a  hurry when it comes to shooting.”

VanOrder is confident she can spark the team in rebounding.

“We’re pretty short and quick this year,” VanOrder said, adding that it will be “very critical” to stay out of foul trouble. “I have to keep myself under control this year and play smart.”

She admitted she needed to focus on playing aggressive while still staying out of foul trouble.

Evart is 0-2, although VanOrder had 23 points and 23 rebounds against Farwell last week in the season opener.

“We’re looking really good,” VanOrder said. “We have a lot of talent and hard working girls with positive attitudes. I think we have what it takes to contend with any team in the conference.”
