VanOrder giving Evart track team valuable points

EVART — Evart’s girls track team has been taking home the victories lately with athletes like sophomore Mara VanOrder paying no small role in those achievements.

VanOrder had a big meet recently for Evart in a dual win against McBain Northern Michigan Christian. She had a 4-8 in high jump and 85-8 in the discus and a 1:04 in the 400. All were PRs for the season.

“I think I’m the strongest in the 400,” she said. “I’d like to get a 59 for sure. It will take a lot more distance workouts in practice and building my endurance and finishing stronger.”

Her second best event is the high jump or 800, VanOrder indicated. She wants 5-0 in the high jump and a 2:29 in the 800.

“I’m working on jumping up instead of out,” she said. “And in the 800, I’m working on a steady pace all the way through the race.”

VanOrder is looking to qualify for the state meet in the 400 and high jump.

“The team is looking really good,” she said. “I definitely feel this is the most team unity we’ve had in a long time. We’re strong in all field events and we’re really strong in distances.”

The Wildcats were at the Central Montcalm Invitational last Saturday. They are scheduled to be at Marion this Saturday for the Division 4 regionals and at McBain next Tuesday for the Highland Conference meet.
