VanOrder earns all-state honorable mention honors

EVART – Evart defensive lineman Devon VanOrder was named to the Associated Press’ all-state honorable mention team last week.

VanOrder helped guide the Wildcats to a 7-2 regular season mark and to the MHSAA playoffs for the second time in school history. Evart won its first postseason game in school history against Carson City before falling to Lake City in the second round.

“Devon was really technically sound,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “He was a fellow who really had to be doubled-team or he was a dominant force.”

VanOrder played a big part in the success, accumulating 62 tackles, one sack and one interception. A lot of that success came because of the hard work he put in the offseason, Craven said.

“He’s a physical presence  and he works hard in the off season, not just one offseason, but four seasons,” he said. “When you combine that work ethic with the physical ability, that usually leads to success.”

VanOrder is playing basketball this winter for Evart.

The Wildcats were 8-3. One of their losses was to Beal Cty, which was runner-up in Division 8. Two of their losses were to Lake City, which lost in the state playoffs to eventual state champion Ishpeming.
