VanOrder continues to put up impressive, consistent numbers for Evart

EVART — Mara VanOrder continues to have a banner senior season for Evart’s girls basketball team.

It hit a high note on Thursday when VanOrder had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 11 steals in her team’s 31-21 Highland Conference win over Marion and the Wildcats’ first victory of the season.

The previous week, the Wildcats lost narrowly to Lake City, which was undefeated at that time.

“I thought we played the best game we have all season,” VanOrder said after that contest.  “We swung the ball from side to side and definitely executed what we’ve done in practice.”

Lacking patience on offense and throwing up low percentage shots has been hurting the team at times.

VanOrder has been averaging double figures in points and rebounds.

“I think the girls on my team have really been helping me out to get open,” she said. “They’ve been helping me get my shots off.”

It’s important, VanOrder said, in having the “mental process in believing we can win.”

VanOrder wants to work on her free throws and be more consistent, especially since she’s been visiting the line extensively.

Evart was home with Pine River on Tuesday and plays at McBain on Friday.
